Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream
  • 1 egg yolk
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 shot rum, bourbon, whisky, or brandy (optional)
  • whipped cream (optional)

Instructions

  1. In a 1-quart saucepan, heat the milk and cream on medium heat.
  2. In a small bowl, combine the egg yolk, sugar, and nutmeg.
  3. Once the milk mixture simmers, slowly whisk a tablespoon of it into the egg/sugar mixture to temper the egg.
  4. Pour the egg mixture into the saucepan and cook on low heat, stirring constantly for about 10 minutes until it reaches 160°F or slightly thickens.
  5. Remove from heat, stir in the vanilla, and pour into a mug.
  6. Add rum, bourbon, whisky, or brandy to taste if desired, and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes.
