Ingredients
- 1/2 cup milk
- 1/2 cup heavy cream
- 1 egg yolk
- 2 tablespoons sugar
- 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
- 1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1 shot rum, bourbon, whisky, or brandy (optional)

Instructions
- In a 1-quart saucepan, heat the milk and cream on medium heat.
- In a small bowl, combine the egg yolk, sugar, and nutmeg.
- Once the milk mixture simmers, slowly whisk a tablespoon of it into the egg/sugar mixture to temper the egg.
- Pour the egg mixture into the saucepan and cook on low heat, stirring constantly for about 10 minutes until it reaches 160°F or slightly thickens.
- Remove from heat, stir in the vanilla, and pour into a mug.
- Add rum, bourbon, whisky, or brandy to taste if desired, and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes.
