Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream
  • 1 egg yolk
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 shot rum, bourbon, whisky, or brandy (optional)
  • whipped cream (optional)

Instructions

  1. In a 1-quart saucepan, heat the milk and cream on medium heat.
  2. In a small bowl, combine the egg yolk, sugar, and nutmeg.
  3. Once the milk mixture simmers, gradually whisk it into the egg mixture to temper the egg.
  4. Pour the tempered egg mixture back into the saucepan and cook on low heat, stirring constantly until it reaches 160 degrees F or slightly thickens.
  5. Remove from heat, stir in the vanilla, and pour into a mug.
  6. Add rum, bourbon, whisky, or brandy to taste, if desired, and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes.
