Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream
  • 1 egg yolk
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 shot of rum, bourbon, whisky, or brandy (optional)
  • Whipped cream (optional)

Instructions

  1. In a 1-quart saucepan, heat the milk and cream over medium heat.
  2. Meanwhile, in a small bowl, combine the egg yolk, sugar, and nutmeg.
  3. Once the milk mixture begins to simmer, remove from the heat and slowly whisk 1 tablespoon of the mixture into the egg/sugar mixture.
  4. Gradually add and whisk small amounts of the milk mixture into the egg mixture, tempering the egg to match the temperature of the milk without cooking it.
  5. Pour the egg mixture into the saucepan and return to low heat, stirring constantly for about 10 minutes or until the mixture reaches 160 degrees F or slightly thickens.
  6. Remove from heat, stir in the vanilla, and pour into a mug.
  7. Add optional rum, bourbon, whisky, or brandy to taste, and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes before serving.
