Ingredients
- 1/2 cup milk
- 1/2 cup heavy cream
- 1 egg yolk
- 2 tablespoons sugar
- 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
- 1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1 shot of rum, bourbon, whisky, or brandy (optional)
- Whipped cream (optional)
Instructions
- In a 1-quart saucepan, heat the milk and cream over medium heat.
- Meanwhile, in a small bowl, combine the egg yolk, sugar, and nutmeg.
- Once the milk mixture begins to simmer, remove from the heat and slowly whisk 1 tablespoon of the mixture into the egg/sugar mixture.
- Gradually add and whisk small amounts of the milk mixture into the egg mixture, tempering the egg to match the temperature of the milk without cooking it.
- Pour the egg mixture into the saucepan and return to low heat, stirring constantly for about 10 minutes or until the mixture reaches 160 degrees F or slightly thickens.
- Remove from heat, stir in the vanilla, and pour into a mug.
- Add optional rum, bourbon, whisky, or brandy to taste, and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes before serving.
