Indulge in a classic 17th-century chocolate porter flip, updated with dark rum, sugar syrup, and a touch of nutmeg. Perfect for sipping hot or cold.

Ingredients

  • 1.70 oz Meantime chocolate porter
  • 1.20 oz dark rum
  • 0.50 oz sugar syrup
  • 1 egg
  • grated nutmeg, for serving

Instructions

  1. For a cold serving, combine the chocolate porter, dark rum, sugar syrup, and egg in a shaker, and shake vigorously without ice to blend and aerate the egg.
  2. Add ice to the shaker and shake vigorously again for 10-15 seconds.
  3. Strain the mixture into a glass with a few ice cubes, if desired.
  4. Grate nutmeg over the top before serving.
  5. For a hot serving, combine the chocolate porter, dark rum, sugar syrup, and egg in a pan.
  6. Heat the mixture gently while whisking until warmed through, taking care not to overheat and scramble the egg.
  7. Pour the warmed mixture into a glass and grate nutmeg over the top.
